The application of Electronic Warfare (EW) embraces the full spectrum of modern warfare, from the collection of intelligence in peacetime to delivering electronic attack in war, from the self-protection of land, maritime and air platforms to countering today’s terrorist threat.
National priorities in the application of EW - and hence investment in EW capability - vary according to the perceived or actual threat to operations. Today, much of this investment is directed towards the terrorist threat which demands increasingly complex use of the electromagnetic environment to provide adequate countermeasures. Moreover, simple but critical threats such as small arms fire can demand a relatively sophisticated solution in the form of a hostile fire indicator. The application of EW in cyberspace, by both terrorist and warfighter alike, is also gaining in prominence.
